Thomas Ender


(Vienna 1793-1875) A motif from Attersee with the Höllengebirge (mountains) and figure staffage, watercolor on paper,27 x 43 cm, mounted, framed, (Hu)After several study trips Thomas Ender was awarded the Great painters‘ prize for landscape painting by the Emperor in 1817. Duke Clemens Metternich acquired the awarded painting and subsequently supported the artist. In 1823 Ender was active in the Salzkammergut by order of Metternich. Ender combined his artistic ability in landscape painting with his scientific interest in topografic situations. „First he made watercolors. Apparently they were already planned for transfer, rich in detail with delicate gradations of tones and more linear than painterly“ (Comp. Walter Koschatzky, Thomas Ender, Graz 1982, p. 46).
